The South Fork Sea Farmers, in partnership with the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation, proudly presented the Steward of the Marine Environment Award to Jocelyn Garcia, a senior at East Hampton High School. The $15,000 award recognizes exceptional commitment to marine conservation and environmental stewardship on the East End of Long Island.

Jocelyn has exemplified these values through her dedication and hands-on involvement in protecting our local waters. Over the past three years, she has interned with the South Fork Sea Farmers, blending her academic studies in science research with real-world environmental impact. Her work focused on the planning, design, and construction of three oyster reefs—a significant contribution to the health of our bays and marine ecosystems.

Oysters play a vital role in maintaining water quality and biodiversity, filtering thousands of gallons of water per day and creating habitats for other marine life. Jocelyn's work in building these reefs not only contributes to cleaner, more resilient waters today but also ensures a healthier marine environment for generations to come.

In the fall, Jocelyn will attend George Washington University, where she plans to continue her studies in environmental science and policy. Her story is a testament to the power of youth leadership, science education, and community partnerships in tackling the environmental challenges we face.

"We are incredibly proud of Jocelyn," said Bob Tymann from South Fork Sea Farmers. "Her passion, discipline, and commitment to marine conservation serve as an inspiration to our entire community. She has truly earned this award and recognition."

As Jocelyn takes the next step in her academic and environmental journey, her legacy in East Hampton will live on beneath the surface—on oyster reefs quietly working to keep our bays alive and thriving.
