First Oyster Spawn

Magic Moment

Sperm fertilizes the eggs in the water column

Larvae

The newly formed larvae will swim and feed for approximately two weeks

Setting

Now at the "Pediveliger" stage they are ready to attach to a substrate, a process known as "setting"

Spat

When an oyster sets, it secretes a glue-like substance after which it can no longer move. At this point, the oyster is known as spat.
